Early On, I located a Model-E Mannlicher style rifle like you have shown here but the one I found was of 30-06 caliber. I have had several Howa rifles in the past and although they are very eye appealing, their quality of steel or close detail's of the machine work can not compare to that of the hand made High quality Husqvarna's. Both actions were used in Gun's Marketed by S&W but the earlier Model 1640 actions are more abundant as stiffer import law's forced S&W to market the model 1500 Japanese rifles made by Howa of Japan, thus cutting their Import ties & Business dealing's with Husqvarna. Later on around 1970 time span the Engineer's at Husqvarna got together and designed a refined version of the 1640 style and that later version is called the model 1900 action. These actions were in House made by Husqvarna and are a scaled down version of the Mauser 98 actions & They are called a small ring action. There were Two actions used on these gun's that were Imported to S&W, the earliest being a Model 1640 action & The Later one being an Improved 1640 action that was known as the Model 1900 action. What you have is a S&W Marketed Imported Husqvarna that S&W Offered from 1967-1973 time span. I was told I would probably never find out how many were actually made. I've been doing some digging and was told neither S & W nor Husqvarna kept very good records on these guns.
